Creating a legacy with your knowledge: turning expertise into passive income

Creating a legacy with your knowledge: turning expertise into income

This is actually a common request. For people who have years and years of experience, working in the “field.”

Often, when I have a meeting where I feel I am in my flow and have “all the answers” I think  – I should make this into a blog article!

As advisers, consultants, coaches, or specialists who impart their knowledge, there is an opportunity, to create something “tangible” out of your knowledge.

So, I have created this guide – to explore how you can create a legacy with your knowledge and  dare we dare – generate passive income.

Some people do this, and some want to do this and never get round to it.

And for those people, what a waste!

All that knowledge. All those real life data points. All that insight that only YOU could have gathers.

One of my clients asked me for advice on transforming her expertise into scalable products.

This is a powerful example of how one can think ahead – how YOU can think ahead, 1-2 years – if you embark on a project.

How can you leveraging your skills to create something real, tangible, “productisable”

Why? Off the top of my head, and considering I like to be as efficient as possible:

  • It allows you to share your expertise with a broader audience
  • Along the way, you can use your preparation work for real time content
  • You can test your methods fresh on new audiences, to see how they work if they are less bespoke, and more repeatable.
  • You can see what exactly makes this something that works for a wide range of people
  • Early on you can establish EXACTLY who this would help – that can be who you market your future project to
  • It opens up opportunities for generating passive income.

In broad terms, these are the steps you can take:

1.  Identify your unique expertise

Start by identifying the areas where you have significant knowledge and experience. This could be anything from business coaching to more niche areas. The key is to pinpoint what makes your expertise unique and valuable.

2.  Organise your content

Once you’ve identified your expertise, the next step is to organise your existing materials. Sorting through your coaching materials and client stories helps in creating a structured approach to content creation, ensuring that your knowledge is presented in a coherent and accessible manner.

3.  List ideas of what your tangible products could be

Here are some ideas to get you started:

  • Books and e-books: A contained product that shares your insights and strategies. This can be a comprehensive guide or a series of shorter, focused works.
  • Online courses: Develop online courses that teach your methods and techniques. Platforms like Udemy or Teachable make it easy to reach a global audience.
  • Card decks: Create card decks that offer daily tips, exercises, or motivational quotes based on your expertise.
  • Mobile apps: Develop an app that provides tools, resources, or daily prompts related to your field.
  • Workbooks and journals: Design workbooks or journals that guide users through exercises and reflections.
  • Webinars and workshops: Record webinars or workshops that can be sold as on-demand content.
  • Templates and toolkits: Offer downloadable templates, checklists, or toolkits that clients can use in their own work.

These products not only serve as a legacy of your expertise but also provide a steady stream of passive income.

4.  Test and iterate

Before fully launching your products, test them with your current clients. A rough prototype made into quick print off worksheets, Google Forms, or presentations is a good start. Here’s where we can help. If you want some ideas how you can make a low cost test version, I can easily run a mini session with you about this specifically. Having  this prototype means you can begin that all important feedback loop. It allows you to refine your offerings and ensure they meet the needs of your audience. Testing new ideas with existing clients is a smart strategy to validate the market demand.

5.  Build Your personal brand

Yes, this needs to be done, as you go, and you won’t regret it. Building a strong personal brand is crucial for long-term success. This involves consistently sharing valuable content, engaging with your audience, and showcasing your expertise. Expanding your brand beyond your current client base will help you reach new audiences and create more opportunities for passive income.

6.  Plan for scalability

Finally, think about scalability. Your goal should be to create a business model that can grow without requiring intense ongoing effort. By focusing on creating products that can be sold repeatedly, you can ensure a steady income stream while freeing up your time for other pursuits.

I know – it’s a lot, but really – it’s worth the journey – as you’ll certainly have plenty of short term wins along the way.

By following these steps, you can create a lasting legacy with your knowledge and enjoy the benefits of passive income. Remember, the key is to start small, test your ideas, and gradually build a portfolio of products that reflect your expertise and passion! If you’re excited, get in touch as we can help. If you’re overwhelmed, also get in touch!
