Pinkananas

Issue 1 - Feb 2006

Hello and a warm welcome to the first 2006
edition of Pinkananas News!

I would like to dedicate this edition to the art of shopping. One of my firm beliefs is that there is not such a thing as a fashion MUST-HAVE. As soon as an item is classified as such, in my book it is automatically confined to the Recycle Bin. Fashion magazines constantly thrust this expression upon us as if we were just a herd of uneducated mortals waiting for their blessing to drape ourselves with something they have deemed cool. When you see the word "must-have" associated with fashion, just remember this:

THE ONLY THING ONE MUST HAVE
IS A SENSE OF STYLE!

Being stylish means being timelessly elegant and elegance is not achieved with the fads of the moment. Use trends as you would use salt: add sparsely only when necessary and never more than a pinch, otherwise you might end up spoiling the whole outfit (or dish!). So, if you "really" feel like you "must have" something (apart from the above mentioned sense of style), make sure it is not too expensive (unless money is no object) and does not look too "this season/month/week only"!

Now, bearing that in mind, here are a few tips for your next outing down Fashion Avenue:

  1. Have an idea of what you want to look like, DEFINE YOUR LOOK: you can be more or less adventurous or conservative, but you should have a solid definition of YOUR image
  2. Don't look at magazines as bibles on how to dress, simply gather ideas of what you might like to wear
  3. Make a shopping list before going shopping
  4. Don't waste your time by browsing through the unsuitable colours rail in shops, since clothes are normally displayed by colour scheme
  5. Don't buy a new wardrobe all at once; start with a few basics and get used to them (styles, colours, flexibility), then add gradually, just like you do in cooking (food analogies seems to work wonders in my fashion world - well, you can take an Italian out of Italy but you can never take Italy out of an Italian)
  6. Don't buy expensive items in trendy colours, add colour with inexpensive items
  7. Always chose quality accessories, cheap ones (especially shoes and bags) will make you, and anything else you are wearing, look cheap
  8. Accept advice from friends and sales assistants, but don't be bullied into wearing something you feel uncomfortable with: if you have done your homework (see points 1-2-3), your should use your own judgement and have the final say (whose money is it anyway?)
  9. Make sure your clothes are the right size for you, regardless of what the label says – remember we can swing between two (sometimes three) sizes, depending on the brand, so do not try to squeeze into a size 12 if a 14 fits you better (you can always cut off the size label if you so object to it!)
  10. DO have your clothes altered as necessary: too long or too short hems (sleeves included) are the first sign of an unstylish and shabby person
  11. I am adding an 11th point so that the above does not sound nor look like the ten commandments of style!

I hope you have enjoyed reading these simple yet not-so-obvious-to-everyone principles. Do master them and your shopping expedition will transform from ordeal to delight.

Arrivederci to the next edition!
