Paul J Skyes website – amazing what we can do on a single page

Monday, September 24th, 2012

Not so long ago, we launched a website for another one of our lovely clients Paul Sykes. We believe it’s better to give clients a smaller, well designed website rather than a large unprofessional one and Paul Skyes is a perfect example of this. He was looking for a clean, well-organised, easy-to-navigate website to launch his business with.

We used pop up light boxes to enable the single paged site to display all of the information that Paul wanted, without the page looking cluttered.

Paul was a pleasure to work with and gave us this lovely testimonial:

“As a novice to the world of website design I needed a business partner who would support me through the process and translate my requirements into reality. Someone who would use their expertise and apply the latest methods in web development and design – without my being overwhelmed with the technicalities. The team at Top Left Design are professional, approachable and very talented -they exceeded my expectations on every level and produced a website that I am very proud of.”

Mitravitae home page

Recently we worked with the fantastic Noël McWilliam from Mitravitae, who wanted to refresh the Mitravitae website and social media so it would accurately reflect the brand. Mitravitae is all about renewable energy, water and food production inspired by nature – value and profit with a social conscience.

We really enjoyed working with Noël and judging by the fabulous testimonial he sent us, the feeling’s mutual!

“Right from our first meeting I knew that Top Left Design had won our business from a choice of two other strong candidates. In retrospect we’re very glad we made that decision. The team at Top Left are passionate, committed and uncompromising in the quality of their work. From the initial questionnaire and discussion, to social media training and launching the finished product, TLD have been faultless. Through their guidance and support we have been able to create a beautiful and effective site, offering excellent value for money and going beyond all initial expectations. We thoroughly enjoyed working with TLD and will miss not having regular contact – for a short while we felt as though we were part of the team!”

Mitravitae blog

We love the fresh clean look of the Mitravitae website. The site features a WordPress blog which regularly posts thought provoking articles on green business, politics and research.

Mitravitae 404

We designed a custom 404 page to guide customers back to the home page or about us page in style.

Mitravitae Twitter background

Links for Twitter and Linkedin were designed into the website to connect all of Mitravitae’s online activity. To connect them even more we designed Noël McWilliam a bespoke Mitravitae themed Twitter background.

3 Reasons Why We Use Owls in Our Branding

Owls on the wall

Ever since we put the owls vinyl mural on the walls of our new office, people have asked us – what’s with all the owls?

A short history of Owls at Top Left Design

Tamlyn originally came up with these as characters for our Twitter background. And we have since been taking these owls through our branding to other stationary,  newsletters, our powerpoint slides, cupcakes at our seminars, proposals, and now our walls in our new offices. And of course there’s the amazing Pinterest board on owls!

Last Halloween we dressed the owls (Oliver the Owl pictured below) in pumpkins for our Halloween Newsletter.

For our seminars, Tamlyn made special Owl cupcakes.

Let’s look at Owls and draw upon the similarities between Top Left Design and Owls. You will see it will become clear.

3 Reasons Why We Use Owls in Our Branding

Owls ask “Who? Who?” At Top Left Design we specialise in creating websites with personality. This means we take the “Who You Are” into the “What You Do”. We never work on any designs for clients unless we ask them a lot about the people in their business, and then we set out to, as much as possible, help the world see the personality of the business and what makes them unique.

Owls stand for Wisdom We consistently stay ahead of the game and study the constantly changing landscape of marketing and especially online marketing. It’s a mixture of design and human psychology. It takes talent and empathy. So, we can safely say, we are wise.

They always look forward and can swivel their heads 360 degrees – that’s ultimately a cool trick but really – we do the same – we are forward thinking, always looking ahead, but we also look ALL around to make sure we are on top of it all! Part of owl’s strategy is based on stealth and surprise. That’s just like us at TLD – we are always coming up with new and innovative ways to keep our clients happy and our readers educated and amused.

Take action now! What visual elements do you use in your branding?

Comment below – or send us a link to your blog – where you explain the reasons for the visuals in your brand. If you can come up with three excellent reasons (like we have above) then you’re onto a winner!

4 years and counting…

Top Left Design – what a place to work! I’ve enjoyed myself so much that I have stayed for 4 years… and counting.

I started working with Keren and Top Left Design back in December 2007 and although I left the UK offices over 2 years ago I am still a proud TLDer.

Keren decided that in light of my 4 year anniversary she would treat me to SPA DAY, and although she couldn’t join me I would be accompanied by her most lovely cousin Gabriella Sholk.

Our Spa Day was at the lovely Cayenne Spa which is part of the Pepper Club Hotel in Cape Town.

Launch of the Thanks and Recognition website

Thanks and Recognition website

At the beginning of January we launched our very first website of 2012 for Thanks and Recognition.

Thanks and Recognition help to create an environment of trust where people feel empowered to thank one another for good deeds they have done in the day.  It works very simply, if somebody does something that you value and want to recognise, you send an email thanking them for what they have done. Thanks and Recognition can then calculate how many times you say thank you in a period of time. There’s lot of theory around the subject and you can find out more on their website.

Ever wanted to spend 1 hour at Top Left Design, but really only had 2.5 minutes?

Monday, January 9th, 2012

Today, Michael put up his iPhone 4S with Olloclip fisheye lens up on our office door using a Gorrillapod and Glif+ mount to hold it in place.

Then he took a timelapse movie of us working away like the busy bees that we are. We also wanted to send a special mention to Amy who works in our Cape Town Office and hasn’t physically been in our new London office yet.

We did have time to wave at all you lovely folk. It’s good to be famous! Check out the video. it’s truly awesome!

And here is a picture of the kit!

Our famous cupcakes – how it all started

Wednesday, November 9th, 2011

How did it all start that every seminar we have freshly baked branded cupcakes? You should first know that we have them baked and iced by our very own, very creative lovely Tamlyn.

Below is a picture of her holding branded TLD owl cupcakes. Proof!

Now a full time member of the TLD team, I first came to Top Left Design as an intern for two weeks when I was just 14 years old. The designer tips I learnt at Top Left Design – by Julien Michot (one of our interns)

Thursday, August 18th, 2011

Julien is one of the two french students (Julien and Caroline) who spent a 10 week  internship at Top Left Design. In this post he shares with you a few new things he learnt about design.

Julien on his last day at TLD

Here is what Julien wrote

Hi everyone! I’ve just finished my 10 weeks internship here at Top Left Design. Usually I work more with the programming side of things, and have never really learnt much about the design process. I like coding because I’ve learnt a lot about how to do it, and so now it’s easy for me. But during this internship I saw that design is not so different from coding, you have to always keep in mind some key rules and guidelines to create a good design.

Here are the 7 most important rules I learnt at top left design during my 10 great weeks:
