Our Say Our Way – I say let’s get this party started!

Tuesday, June 8th, 2010

Of the many exciting projects we’ve got on at the moment, one in particular has tickled my fancy. One that involves canoes, kids, rubber chickens and parachuting eggs. Confused? Let me help you out.

This project is for a new website, called Our Say Our Way, and is to be an online link to the world within the Youth for Youth project.

Our Say Our Way – I say let’s get this party started!

A bit of insight into Youth for Youth:

Youth for Youth was started about a year ago with the aim of empowering young people. It’s a one of kind approach to bringing together young people from all over the UK with similar interests and ideas, as well as forming a support base for those that need one. It is an inspired project that can only provide growth and positivity for all those involved and affected by it. (more…)

Athena Christmas Party

Thursday, December 10th, 2009

Last night the TLD girls – Keren, Tina and Gemma went to the Athena Christmas party (Amy was in South Africa and we all missed her).

It was a brilliant event that included a Christmas Shopping Market and a Business Showcase Hall, where members exhibited their products, a business card draw and most exciting of all – a Fashion Show!

The outfits worn during the Fashion Show were all by Leny from Leny G Couture Design and the models were styled by Nicoletta from Pinkananas. The models were also treated to being professionally made up by make-up artist to the stars Sarah Jagger.

Our very own Gemma was a model for the evening and she says: “The modelling was great fun, we practiced our walks behind the scenes but I was still quite nervous when it was my turn to strut my stuff. The dress I was wearing was beautiful and had been picked especially for me by Leny and Nicoletta.”

Here are some pics:

While the models were showcasing the dresses Nicoletta was describing the dresses. This is what she said for Gemma’s dress:

“GEMMA wears FLOWER CHILD

A feast of sunny joyous colours that celebrate Gemma’s bohemian beauty with the flowery details cleverly scattered throughout this simple and elegant cut to add movement or create sleek lines. A fabulous combination of romantic nuances with classic chic.”

Movember

Tuesday, December 1st, 2009

You may have noticed a suprising increase in moustache abundancy recently – and subsequently as we roll into December, a sudden lack of Tom Selleck look-a-likes.

Are you experiencing any unexpected moustache-withdrawal symptoms?

For anyone who doesn’t already know, Movember is an annual charity event, where for the month of November, men across the world grow moustaches and get sponsored for doing so – all in the fight against prostate cancer!
Think of it like the men’s version of the pink ribbon.

The Movember rules are simple:

  1. Each Mo-Bro must start November 1st with a clean-shaven face
  2. Then, for the entire month of November, each Mo-Bro must grow & groom a moustache according to these rules:
  • There is to be no joining the mo’ to the side burns  – that’s a beard!
  • There is to be no joining of the handlebars on the chin – that’s a goatee!
  • A small complimentary growth under the bottom lip is allowed – (AKA ‘The Tickler’)

It’s been an interesting month to say the least – Thankfully, Keren was very happy for me to participate, and even gave me my first sponsorship! This also meant that I couldn’t back out if the Mo’ became too much to handle!

The first week wasn’t too bad, since at that early stage you can get away with the stubble, though it can look a bit pathetic at the start…

But as the weeks went by, it grew. And grew some more. And that’s when the funny looks on the tube started.
However it’s a defining moment to be on a crowed tube, and see a random man across the way who is also sporting a ‘tache, looking slightly embarrassed. You catch eyes, and give “the nod”.. From one mo-bro to another!

By the end of Movember, my mo’ was huge and more comical than embarrassing!

So far I’ve raised £160 for the cause – much more than I thought I would when I started out!

And at last count, the UK has raised a total of £3,841,626! Almost 4 MILLION pounds!

Globally, Movember has generated £19,790,822 so far, and donations are still welcome!

See this page for the current tally

On Friday night (27th November) I went to the London Movember Gala Party in Battersea Evolution – and it was the best night I have had this year!

It was so much fun, the place was full of awesome friendly people, with such a great atmosphere, I had 2 great friends with me and it went on from 7pm to 3am!
There was an orange carpet outside (the colour of the movember site) – inside was funky 70′s music, 12 bars, photographers, cage dancers, breakdancers, raised dancefloor with camera men feeding footage to a big screen, mechanical bulls, dodgems, ping pong tournaments, poker, blackjack, roulette, goodiebags, and free photobooths (see a picture of me with 2 sexy “Mo Chicks” below!!

4 postcards by Tina Webster from Top Left Design

We wanted to show you a set of 4 postcards designed and illustrated by Tina Webster. Tina works for Top Left Design (as you may have noticed on our Team page) and is also a freelance illustrator. She graduated from Kingston University in 2008 and her work has been featured in the Guardian, Supersweet Magazine and on the London Architecture Diary website. She has also taken part in a number of exhibitions in central London including a submission for Shelter House of Cards exhibition for Amelia’s Magazine, and the Coningsby Gallery and 93 Feet East

Her illustration style is mainly collage and paper cuts. She works by painting paper and then creating textures with objects such as folks, tissue paper and sponges. This gives her illustration work as 3D feel. Her work is suited to book illustration, editorial and advertising. The designs above form part of a series of 4 postcards for Top Left Design. They feature animals which we also use on our Twitter page background.  The postcards will be sent to our clients and friends and the cards can be collected and then placed together to created one big image.

Michael joins TLD and grows a moustache soon after

Wednesday, November 11th, 2009

The open day we held was very successful, thanks to our ad on Sugar Jobs Job Board, and our chosen candidate Michael Hobson happening to apply at midnight, and the fact that Keren saw his response and was awake to write back to him inviting him in for the next day’s open day. Two weeks later, after the open day, a trial day, a Thomas International PPA test, and an intense grilling interview, Michael joined the TLD Team.

He has been doing brilliantly so far, and has participated actively with us on Twitter (follow him on www.twitter.com/tremulantdesign.
Oh, and you may as well follow us too!

One thing he can do which none of us girls at TLD could is participate in “Movember“.

Luckily our friend Alan Ogden from 3DPixel.net (who run our hosting servers) decided to use his own photo retouching skills on our faces, with impressive results.

See below – but really we still want your help donating so click on the image to sponsor Michael and Top Left Design for Movember!

Amy Day – 3 surprises

Tuesday, October 20th, 2009

On the 14th of October, it was Amy’s last day in our London office.  We had 3 surprises organised for Amy. It was hard to keep these things a surprise, because she kept trying to guess. We called this day “Amy Day” and the preparations were extensive.

Surprise number 1: Marina Conway-Gordon from Recognise and Relieve came with her massage bed and each of us had a sports massage.  (Annoyingly, Amy had guessed Marina was coming over in advance – so no surprise there – Grrr!!!)

Surprise number 2: We went for tea at the Dorchester (Marina let it slip as she was leaving – she said “have fun at the Dorchester” and then Amy burst out laughing as Surprise number 1 – Marina – gave away Surprise number 2! Not that she meant to. Aargh!)

Surprise number 3: We had Tamsin Fox-Davies come over with a new goal-setting game called The Wish – which we all played together. At least this surprise was not one that Amy expected.

Alicia’s post TLD post

Tuesday, June 9th, 2009

We asked Alicia Bell, who worked at TLD a while ago, what skills she learned here which still prove useful to her now that she is working in Canada as a marketing manager. Below is what she said!

What I learned at Top Left Design

Working at TLD was definitely a learning experience, not only did I learn HTML and Photoshop, I learned a whole bunch of simple skills that I have been using in almost every job that I’ve had afterwards.

Effective Email

Email communication doesn’t have to be complicated or take a long time. After writing many emails at Top Left Design, I learned that in order to avoid confusion increase efficiency, emails have to be formatted properly and be clear and simple. First, let’s start out with format. It is so important to start out an email with the person’s name. You could say “Hi Martin” or “Martin,” some sort of introduction. When you start an email out with information it can be confusing and not to mention it can seem a little rude. The rest of the email should be broken up into paragraphs and finish with a sign off like “Thanks,” or “Regards,” or whatever you are comfortable with. As for simplicity and clarity – this is the most important part. Unless you want to be writing back and forth all day with questions, its best to be clear about what you are talking about. This means to get the main points out separately. So, if you have to mention several points and ask questions it is good to group them together. When you are asking questions you have to make it obvious that you need an answer. If you say “I was wondering” and trail off with a long complicated question it isn’t clear in the end what you are talking about. On the other hand, writing an email with a quick one line answer can be even more confusing. If you follow all of these simple rules emailing will be less work and people will appreciate the ease of reading your emails.

File in Style – it takes a while but saves a mile!

Another important part of working with emails all day is keeping them organised. An organised email program on your computer means that you can respond faster to clients, colleagues and have a clear idea of what you are working on and will need to work on. By keeping a clear filing system in your inbox you will be able to find an email quickly and easily if you need it for reference. Not to mention that if you keep your inbox clean you can see what you need to work on and what’s new. Once you are finished working on something you can file it away and not worry about it anymore. If you have loads of emails that are in different stages of being complete you’ll have no idea what you are working on. You could also file based on urgency levels, i.e. 3 being least important (maybe ongoing projects that aren’t client based) and 1 being the most important (projects that have a deadline that is quickly approaching). If you are able to do this you will increase your efficiency level at the workplace significantly.

Mean well with a manual!

Another skill that I acquired working at TLD was manual writing. In any position it is important for someone to pick up a piece of paper and be able to figure out how to do a certain task. If you are the only one who knows how to do a certain procedure at your workplace it can be stressful if you are sick or going on vacation. The best way to work on a manual is to break down the process very clearly into bullet points or steps. Once you are complete try to do the steps based on your own instructions, or better yet get someone who knows nothing about the process to do it. That way you will see whether your manual has holes and how you can fix them. Once you have this information down on paper transitional periods will be much simpler at any job.

Overall, keeping organized is not something that everyone knows how to do. By following these easy steps you will be begin to be more efficient and dare I say happier at work. If you know what you are doing and what track you are on things will definitely start to go your way at the workplace.

Maja our intern – her goodbye letter to us!

Sunday, May 10th, 2009

Our last intern Maja who came from Germany has now left us – sad!
We asked her to write about her experience and this is what she said:

———————–
“When I heard about my internship in web design I was a little bit afraid, because I’ve never worked with HTML and web design before. But in the end I enjoyed it and I now know more about web design and how to present the designs to clients.
To be honest – this is my first internship that I really enjoyed. The whole team was very friendly and open minded and it was a very relaxed atmosphere. I even had my own computer – that was great!

The special things I have learnt whilst on my internship were:

Using Adobe Photoshop, Macromedia HomeSite, Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Indesign
How to make a gradient (using Layers) [ Photoshop]
How a website is designed in Photoshop then built in HTML (Footer, Top, Navigation, font size & Home and Inner, Templates) [ Photoshop & HomeSite]

I had a lot of projects, which was very good – so I could do a lot of designs which made me very happy. Sometimes I thought I was very helpful, so I hope at the end I was very useful to your company.

Every day I tried my best and the whole time in the internship was a very good experience for me. Thank you for giving me a lot of different projects to work on. This was very good and has built on my experiences.

I wish I could stay longer in your company because it was a really good time for me. I really liked this internship. This was the best internship I’ve ever had (seriously!).

In the past the other internships were not as good as here, because the atmosphere was not as good….a couple of my bosses were uptight and not good-humoured like you and your team are.

It was a great time at Top Left Design for me!”
——————-

We will miss Maja too!
She was hard working, showed great talent, was quick to learn and helpful. We wish her luck in her future career – keep in touch!
