Client Love Post: “I wish all relationships were this easy” – Well Cate, you make it easy! An interview with Cate from Bene Media

Thursday, May 2nd, 2013

We love to feature our clients, especially the ones who are most “well behaved” – meaning they listen to us, and love to take what we have created for them as tools – and run with it.

Bene Media Website

One such client is Cate Meredith from Bene Media. She is actually based in Virginia, so we couldn’t meet her in person, and in fact we still haven’t.

Working with Cate was an absolute pleasure. She was so enthusiastic and easy going, and was so happy every time we showed her the next phase. We did all our meetings with Skype video and basically as
I went through each stage with her, there was always happy exclamations and appreciations. I loved working with her and can’t wait to meet her in person! (more…)

We’ve said it before – and we’ll say it again – It’s really amazing what you can do with a single page site

Sunday, March 17th, 2013

We have a service called “single page website” – ideal for startups or people who aren’t sure what they would have on a full website.

They can also be used as “holding pages” while a full website is being worked on, especially if the old version of your site is embarrassing you in some way!

These pages can be scrolling and that means they can have a lot of information  And if you link it to your social channels you get a home base for your entire presence on the web. It’s genius I tell you. Below are some of the ones we have done recently for clients. Click on them to see the full websites – but remember, they are single pagers.

Our first responsive website – Aspire Leadership!

Thursday, November 22nd, 2012

We are very proud to announce the launch of our first completely bespoke designed responsive site - Aspire Leadership!

Responsive design is a way of designing and building websites so that on each type of device, it shows up differently because the width of the screen and the nature of the device. Images can resize and navigation links can reposition themselves accordingly. It takes a lot of planning and thought to create one of these sites, but it was really a fun project for Aric and JP. See the pictures below for a bit of “spot the difference”.

Our clients, Bronia and Liz, were also a joy to work with. You can follow Liz on Twitter here and Bronia on Twitter here.

We asked JP what his thoughts were on building this site. He said “There were days when I lost a lot of hair, days when I thought I had finnally bitten off more than I can chew. Everything I do is challenging, if it wasn’t challenging i would do something else, but building a responsive website like Aspire Leadership gave me more challenges than I expected. The challanges that I enjoyed the most were the ones that made me want to pull out my last hair, and just before I pull it out I get this ahh haa moment, the moment when it all just clicks. That is the reason why I like to code, being able rise above and finding solutions to where you thought there was no solution. And in the end it all just works”.

Paul J Skyes website – amazing what we can do on a single page

Monday, September 24th, 2012

Not so long ago, we launched a website for another one of our lovely clients Paul Sykes. We believe it’s better to give clients a smaller, well designed website rather than a large unprofessional one and Paul Skyes is a perfect example of this. He was looking for a clean, well-organised, easy-to-navigate website to launch his business with.

Paul Skyes homepage

We used pop up light boxes to enable the single paged site to display all of the information that Paul wanted, without the page looking cluttered.

Paul was a pleasure to work with and gave us this lovely testimonial:

“As a novice to the world of website design I needed a business partner who would support me through the process and translate my requirements into reality. Someone who would use their expertise and apply the latest methods in web development and design – without my being overwhelmed with the technicalities. The team at Top Left Design are professional, approachable and very talented -they exceeded my expectations on every level and produced a website that I am very proud of.”

Mitravitae home page

Recently we worked with the fantastic Noël McWilliam from Mitravitae, who wanted to refresh the Mitravitae website and social media so it would accurately reflect the brand. Mitravitae is all about renewable energy, water and food production inspired by nature – value and profit with a social conscience.

We really enjoyed working with Noël and judging by the fabulous testimonial he sent us, the feeling’s mutual!

“Right from our first meeting I knew that Top Left Design had won our business from a choice of two other strong candidates. In retrospect we’re very glad we made that decision. The team at Top Left are passionate, committed and uncompromising in the quality of their work. From the initial questionnaire and discussion, to social media training and launching the finished product, TLD have been faultless. Through their guidance and support we have been able to create a beautiful and effective site, offering excellent value for money and going beyond all initial expectations. We thoroughly enjoyed working with TLD and will miss not having regular contact – for a short while we felt as though we were part of the team!”

Mitravitae blog

We love the fresh clean look of the Mitravitae website. The site features a WordPress blog which regularly posts thought provoking articles on green business, politics and research.

Mitravitae 404

We designed a custom 404 page to guide customers back to the home page or about us page in style.

Mitravitae Twitter background

Links for Twitter and Linkedin were designed into the website to connect all of Mitravitae’s online activity. To connect them even more we designed Noël McWilliam a bespoke Mitravitae themed Twitter background.

Launch of The Athena Network Singapore website – in record time! Whew!

Athena Singapore website - www.theathenanetwork.com.sg/

We made it! Two weeks ago we got an email from our client Gina, founder of Athena Singapore, saying they wanted Top Left Design to design and build a website for Athena in Singapore. We already have worked with Gina with clients in Singapore and there are a few more projects in the pipeline – the start of a strong global partnership! It was to be a WordPress based site and needed to be designed and built by the 24th – today – in time for their big launch event.
A mammoth task!

What is Athena Singapore?

With a membership made up of only female executives and entrepreneurs, The Athena Network provides a networking and collaboration platform for members to share knowledge and experience across a diverse range of industry sectors – for mutual referrals, support and successs. The Athena Network in Singapore signifies the expansion to the Asia-Pacific region, The Athena Network provides members with international collaboration opportunities and a rapidly growing online community where women can interact and share information, skills and business contacts.

How did we pull it off?

We had four of our designers work last week on design concepts, and showed 3 options to Gina and Claire. Claire Kidd (copywriter and content strategist and co-founder of Athena Singapore) the meantime worked on writing all the copy.)

One design was chosen on Friday, and we made a small tweak to the position of the social media links, and sent it back that night.

On Sunday I came in to our office and worked on the beginning of the inner page designs and then briefed Amy to continue on Monday morning. She worked till 2pm (UK time – 4pm Cape Town time) and then sent it to Tamlyn to continue with the inner page designs. We sent this over for feedback from Claire and Gina and then got those changes made and signed off on Tuesday. Then it was up to our coding team to work on the HTML / CSS build. This was really what we needed for the site to be launched, and next week we will continue to make this website fully integrated with WordPress.

We are still working on testing and tweaks but the site had to go live today for their big launch event.

Check out the site here, we hope you love it!

And you can go find Athena Singapore on Facebook or on Athena Singapore on Twitter and congratulate Claire and Gina on their new site!

Launch of Rosie Millard’s revamped website!

Thursday, February 16th, 2012

We recently launched Rosie Millard’s new website! You may have seen this in our most recent launches section of Top Left Designs latest newsletter ‘Make Do and Mend’.

Rosie Millard is a journalist, broadcaster and author. As well as her newly launched website, Rosie also has a mummy’s blog which we launched in June 2011 called Helicopter mum.

Rosie came to Top Left Design requiring a complete website and blog revamp. Her old website and blog were seperate from one another and were in need of a modern, professional re design as well as being joint together.

Rosie’s old website shown below was quite outdated and in need of a contemporary re-design.

Websites for UK Financial Advisers & Financial Planners

Thursday, February 9th, 2012

In the last year we have been working on a number of websites for financial planners and financial advisers in the UK, along with our strategic partner the lovely Abbie Tanner from A Business Innovation.

Abbie does the strategy and content planning, as well as the copy writing and value proposition, and we have been designing and building the websites according to the brief and branding that results from this.

Below we have gone through some of the projects we have worked on so far and we will add more as we go along – so keep checking back!

The evolution of a logo – Recognise & Relieve

Tuesday, January 31st, 2012

Your logo is the main element of your branding which you’ll use pretty much everywhere along with your brand colours. Two people who understand the importance of logo design and brand colours are our very own Tamlyn Hall from TLD and colour consultant Karen Haller.

Karen Haller is an Applied Colour Psychology Specialist.  She helps business owners to communicate their brand’s authentic business personality in colour, further strengthening their marketing message to increase brand recognition by standing out from the competition and increasing sales.

BEFORE: Recognise & Relieve old logo & brand colours

Recognise & Relieve old logo

Recognise & Relieve old brand colours

In analysing the old Recognise and Relieve brand colours Karen Haller found that the brown colour palette is from the colour family related to the Autumn season. The monotone variants of brown give an overall subliminal message of safety, seriousness, reliability and support.

Looking at the brand’s core values – aiding positive change, healing and self awareness in a calm and nurturing environment, the old brown monotone colour palette may have, over time, reflected a feeling of heaviness, reluctance for change and seriousness.
