We’ve said it before – and we’ll say it again – It’s really amazing what you can do with a single page site

Sunday, March 17th, 2013

We have a service called “single page website” – ideal for startups or people who aren’t sure what they would have on a full website.

They can also be used as “holding pages” while a full website is being worked on, especially if the old version of your site is embarrassing you in some way!

These pages can be scrolling and that means they can have a lot of information  And if you link it to your social channels you get a home base for your entire presence on the web. It’s genius I tell you. Below are some of the ones we have done recently for clients. Click on them to see the full websites – but remember, they are single pagers.

Icon fonts are awesome – a note to our designers

Friday, March 15th, 2013

You might not know much about it, so let’s state this clear and loud before I go any further: Icon fonts are awesome!

The web is moving, IE8 and below are sinking. Get over it.

Why it’s important to use them

Moving forward, we use more and more HTML5 and CSS3 in our code, we design and build for the mobile web, Think less pictures, more code. Technically, this means less HTTP requests to send and less files to load, which reduces the page load time drastically.

Designer and developer friendly

From a designer point of view it doesn’t change much, except that your website might not look as wonderful as it should in IE8 and below. But as I like to say, in the end of the day the user decide what browsing experience they want to have, and they are some nice way to make them aware of this.

We are already using CSS3 for rounded corners, shadows, some gradients, web fonts, etc. Now I’d like you to take a look at the following link and think about it: . No doubt you’ll see how awesome it is.

This is a large and widely supported font icons library, and you can even submit your own icons if the one you want isn’t there! Some very important advantages are:

  • You can resize them as you wish – use the ‘font-size’ property.
  • You can change their colour easily. ‘font-color’ it is – nice guess!
  • You can still have them wrapped in a shape of any colour.
  • Page loads quicker, because you send less HTTP requests and load one CSS file instead of x amount of pictures.

Still not convinced?

If you love the idea as much as I do, please feel free to use these icons in your designs – see all the nice uses you can make of them on the website above.

Should you have any questions in this regard, please give me a shout!

Launch of Rosie Millard’s revamped website!

Thursday, February 16th, 2012

We recently launched Rosie Millard’s new website! You may have seen this in our most recent launches section of Top Left Designs latest newsletter ‘Make Do and Mend’.

Rosie Millard is a journalist, broadcaster and author. As well as her newly launched website, Rosie also has a mummy’s blog which we launched in June 2011 called Helicopter mum.

Rosie came to Top Left Design requiring a complete website and blog revamp. Her old website and blog were seperate from one another and were in need of a modern, professional re design as well as being joint together.

Rosie’s old website shown below was quite outdated and in need of a contemporary re-design.

The evolution of a logo – Recognise & Relieve

Tuesday, January 31st, 2012

Your logo is the main element of your branding which you’ll use pretty much everywhere along with your brand colours. Two people who understand the importance of logo design and brand colours are our very own Tamlyn Hall from TLD and colour consultant Karen Haller.

Karen Haller is an Applied Colour Psychology Specialist.  She helps business owners to communicate their brand’s authentic business personality in colour, further strengthening their marketing message to increase brand recognition by standing out from the competition and increasing sales.

BEFORE: Recognise & Relieve old logo & brand colours

Recognise & Relieve old brand colours

In analysing the old Recognise and Relieve brand colours Karen Haller found that the brown colour palette is from the colour family related to the Autumn season. The monotone variants of brown give an overall subliminal message of safety, seriousness, reliability and support.

Looking at the brand’s core values – aiding positive change, healing and self awareness in a calm and nurturing environment, the old brown monotone colour palette may have, over time, reflected a feeling of heaviness, reluctance for change and seriousness.

Tuesday, August 16th, 2011

Food – Its yummy and we can’t live without it! (even if you tried). Designing a food website presents an interesting challenge – the design has to look good enough to eat!
Whether it be for a restaurant, or a company that sells food online, the focus has to be on the product, which in these cases, are the food itself, or the venue in which you will be eating the delicious consumables.

Good professional photography is essential for this genre of website, and thankfully, our clients recognise this with the beautiful images they have supplied to us in the past.
