Our recruitment process – starting with an Open Day

Wednesday, September 30th, 2009

We have a unique company where our creative people have to be practical too. They each manage their own projects and clients and therefore their skills need to include:

- giving pragmatic advice
- reassuring clients
- managing complete projects
- quoting for any extra requested features
- invoicing
- proactively keeping projects moving
- managing suppliers

Its a tall order and not many designers do all of this in their jobs. But we like our clients to have direct contact with the designers who are working on their projects, so this means the designers have to be well versed in all the skills of customer care.

We recently held an open day to help us find our new member of staff. It was an “interesting” day and we had 11 candidates coming along. We got each person filling out a little questionnaire, with the hidden purpose of testing their attention to detail and instruction following skills as they had to save the document as a renamed PDF in a folder with their name and save it in a particular drive on our PC network. You would be surprised how many of the candidates did this incorrectly! In fact, only 2 people did it right!

There are 4 of us working at Top Left Design now and we each interviewed each candidate for 2-5 mins each. So we were able to get quick first impressions. This made the subsequent shortlist process surprisingly easy, as only a couple of people “ticked all the boxes”

Next step now is to get each of the shortlisted candidates in for a half day trial day, where they are given tasks to test their design skills, working under pressure, instruction following, attention to detail, and use of software. Many tasks require cross referencing. For example one of our blogs needs updating and the test will be if they can create a thumbnail image, upload it, find the correct information and enter it.

Anyway, the idea is that our tasks are all designed to test various skills. This week there are 3 shortlisted people coming in for the trial days. They are all equally likely to get the job so these days will be very very interesting.

Any questions? Please feel free to ask!

Our intern Nadja – says some nice things about her time at Top Left Design

Wednesday, September 30th, 2009

Our last intern, Nadja (from Germany), was with us for the month of September. She was fantastic, and we were impressed by her speed of learning, efficiency and attention to detail. Perfect TLD material, but she is back in Germany now. Below are her lovely comments about her time with us! We are sad she has gone but happy she could spend September with us!

“The team of Top Left Design is young, dynamic and very open minded and it was easy to get along with everybody. The team was so friendly and even thought of my birthday.
I was really impressed how quick the employees of Top Left Design could work with the graphic programs, I learned so much about using those programs faster by applying short cuts.
The whole team thought me so much only by analyzing my design work, giving me advice and making me think farther so that I could improve a lot of my designs.
It was a great pleasure to work at Top Left Design, the working atmosphere was very harmonic and sometimes pretty funny.
I really enjoyed my time and loved the work and I hope I’ll have the chance to come back someday. Working at Top Left Design encouraged me to be on the right way in life.”

Kamaka Website - screenshot

Our client Marcie Buxton came to us with a need for a full set of material for her new business – www.kamaka.co.uk

This included:

  • Logo/Branding
  • Business cards
  • Compliment Slips
  • Letterheads
  • Email Footers
  • Website – design, build, and hosting
  • Blog integrated into the website – www.kamaka.co.uk/blog

On the 17th September, 2009, we all attended fantastic launch event for Kamaka, hosted by Beautiful Events with inspiring speakers who spoke about success and potential within women owned and and run businesses and organisations. Many of Marcie’s clients were there and were singing her praises. And of course, we got a mention as well!

The speakers included Jo Booth and Caroline Rich from EURO RSCG and Bridget Edwards – from Anne Peaker Centre for Arts in Criminal Justice.

Below are pictures featuring Amy, Tina, Keren, Anders and also Jamie from Beautiful Events! More pictures can be seen at www.kamaka.co.uk/events.htm

Here is what Marcie Buxton, founder of Kamaka, had to say of her experience:

“Top Left Design is a web design company with a special creative vibe, with an edge, with charisma. You are charmed by their talent, commitment and excellent customer service which means you want to go back for more!

I met Keren, the director through a mutual friend at a time when the advice around me was to make do without a website and not to invest in one as I was a new business.

I met Keren and changed my mind, did not listen to the nay sayers and it was my first great decision for KAMAKA. From initial talks and planning in May, the brand and website was launched a London party on 17 September. Many complimented the site and continue to do so.

They have given me a company brand, logo and website to be proud of – reflecting me – always a good thing for PR.

I would highly recommend them.”

Call, Email, or Social Media? Which is best?

Tuesday, September 15th, 2009

A lot of people are over-reliant on email and feel like they spend most of their desk time writing and replying to emails!

On the other hand some people prefer to call and would benefit from taking the time to write a proper email – in the end it could even save time as emails are an opportunity to clearly list action points and confirm proper detail.

Here is a quick and easy guide – worth a read we promise! And we have even included a special list of when its best to use Social Media for communication!

Call, Email, or Social Media? Which is best?

Phoning is good for:

  • Building rapport with a client or a supplier
  • Explaining how to do things if step by step emails didn’t make sense – on the phone, you can gauge the reaction and explain certain things more and not explain some things as much.
  • On the phone you can bounce ideas off each other
  • If this client seems stressed in an email, and you want to let them know all is well, you can reassure the client by phone
  • Getting a quick answer for something from a supplier or a client.

Email is good for:

  • Sending step by step instructions so the recipient can sit in their own time and try out the tasks
  • If you want to send a confirmation that something has been done and include a link.
  • Email is good for accepting an invitation or confirming attendance to an event or a meeting, so the recipient can keep track.
  • Emails can be quicker as there is less small talk
  • Emails are good for recapping a call with the points of action – to make things more official and avoid misunderstanding

It is good to use email to make sure details are understood – especially for when quoting money, confirming costs, confirming exact action points, details and deadlines.

Social Media is good for:

Now, a NEW method of communication has come out FULL FORCE – people are using Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn to communicate more than ever before. Here are some useful ideas for how to use Social Media networks like Facebook or Twitter to save space in your email inbox!

  • Saying “hi” and “it was good to meet you” – this is a message that can be done on Twitter and shows the rest of your followers who you met and that it was a good meeting!
  • Sharing an interesting link or article you found with someone – via a retweet and an @reply on Twitter to someone who you think will find the information useful.
  • Showing you liked something someone did – as it’s a public forum, Twitter is a great place to praise someone’s work or blog article! Hint Hint!
  • Introducing two people – if you @reply two people or copy two people in, Twitter/Facebook or LinkedIn are ideal for this as the contact information will be available on people’s profiles
